Laura Nyro wrote "Stoned Soul Picnic" herself, words and music, and cut it for Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, the album she put out in March 1968. It's an invitation to a gathering, and it hangs on a word of her own invention, "surry", which runs all through the lyric. When producer Charlie Calello asked her what it meant, she told him it was simply a nice word. Guesses since have ranged from a squeezed-together "let's hurry" to the old horse-drawn surrey carrying everyone to the picnic.
