The title track of John Hiatt's 1983 album, his sixth and the second of three he made for Geffen, "Riding With the King" started out as somebody else's dream: it was drawn from an odd one Scott Mathews had, though Mathews never got a writing credit, which reads Hiatt, words and music.
The album was split down the middle. Mathews and Ron Nagle produced side one at The Pen in San Francisco, with Mathews playing everything but the guitar and singing all the backing vocals, while Nick Lowe produced side two at Eden Studios in London with the Cowboy Outfit, the players he'd make two albums with in the mid-'80s. B.B. King and Eric Clapton later covered it on their joint album of the same name, with Hiatt reworking the lyrics for them.
