Iris DeMent wrote "Our Town" on her own for Infamous Angel, the debut album the country singer-songwriter released on Philo Records in 1992. Jim Rooney produced it and Richard Adler mixed it, and the backing is all wood and wire: DeMent and Mark Howard on acoustic guitars, Stuart Duncan on fiddle and mandolin, Al Perkins on resonator guitar, Roy Huskey Jr. on double bass and Pete Wasner on piano.
John Prine wrote the album's liner notes, and Robert Hilburn of the Los Angeles Times compared her music to his. In 1995 the song played over the closing moments of the final episode of the CBS series Northern Exposure, and it has been recorded by Kate Rusby, Jody Stecher, Kate Brislin and Trampled by Turtles.
