Halsey sent "You Should Be Sad" out through Capitol in January 2020, the third single to come off Manic, their third studio album, and it's pure country pop: a ballad about a breakup, aimed squarely at an ex who cheated. Halsey wrote it with producer Greg Kurstin, and critics singled out the lyrics for praise.
It reached 26 on the Hot 100, the album's second-best showing there, and went top ten in Australia and Ireland. Colin Tilley directed the video, which drops Halsey into an underground country-western nightclub full of line dancers; reviews of that were mixed.
