Lindsey Buckingham wrote "Never Going Back Again", words and music, and it's one of the leanest, brightest little shocks on Rumours, the eleventh studio album Fleetwood Mac unleashed on February 4, 1977. Buckingham plays the guitar and sings, and the band produced it with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut, who engineered it too.

Like several Rumours songs, it crawled out of the wreckage of his romance with bandmate Stevie Nicks, and it was one of the last things written for the record, by which time he'd taken up with someone new on the rebound. Buckingham later called it sweet and naive and didn't think the lyric went very deep; what's left is a vow not to make the same mistakes twice. On single it lived as a flip side, backing "Don't Stop" in America, "You Make Loving Fun" in Britain and "Dreams" in the Netherlands.
