"Hot Knife" comes from Fiona Apple's 2012 album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, out that June, and it's built from an unusual kit. Apple wrote it alone, sings it and plays the timpani herself.
Nearly everything else runs through Charley Drayton, her co-producer: he plays drums, percussion, marimba, guitar, autoharp, bouzouki, kora and strings, sings the baritone part, and helped record it alongside Eddison Sainsbury and John Would. Maude Maggart adds background vocals, and Dave Way mixed it.
