Jason Isbell wrote "Outfit" on his own, words and music, for Decoration Day, the 2003 Drive-By Truckers album that was his first with the band as a guitarist, which makes it one of his first songs on a Truckers record.
The album was cut mostly live in two weeks at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens, Georgia, with David Barbe, once the bassist in Sugar, producing, and it pulls back from the heavy southern rock thunder of Southern Rock Opera, the acclaimed record before it, toward something quieter and more stripped down. Isbell cut two more records with the Truckers, then left in 2007 to go solo.
