Deer Tick filed "The Dream's in the Ditch" onto Negativity, the American indie rockers' fifth album and their first for the Canadian label Arts & Crafts, released on September 24, 2013. The band cut the record in Portland, Oregon, with Los Lobos' Steve Berlin producing, and the writing got underway in 2012, a rough patch in John McCauley's personal life. This song, though, comes from Ian O'Neil, who wrote both the words and the music.
