Cat Stevens found "Moonshadow" on holiday in Spain. A kid from London's West End who had always had streetlamps between him and the night sky, he was standing by the water on a beautiful night under a glowing moon when he looked down and saw his own shadow for the first time. Of all his older songs, it's the one he likes best. A&M issued it as an American single in June 1971, and it also landed on Teaser and the Firecat that year.

Paul Samwell-Smith produced. Around Stevens' voice, guitar and keyboard sit Alun Davies on guitar, Larry Steele on bass and congas, Harvey Burns and Gerry Conway on drums, two bouzouki players in Angelos Hatzipavli and Andreas Toumazis, and strings from Del Newman. Cash Box heard his whimsical side in it; Billboard called it a "super rhythm ballad".
