"Atomic Number" comes from case/lang/veirs, the self-titled debut of the Canadian-American trio of Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs, recorded in November 2015 and released in June 2016. All three wrote it and co-produced it with Tucker Martine, who also engineered and mixed, and the credits add strings from the Tosca String Quartet and extra keyboards from Michael Finn, who shared the engineering.
The album drew rapturous reviews, with Pitchfork's Laura Snapes praising the playing and the way it leans on images from the natural world, and it invited comparisons to Trio, the 1987 album by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Nobody was promising a sequel, though: lang herself called it a one-off record.
