"Goin' Against Your Mind" led the way for You in Reverse, Built to Spill's sixth album, going out on Warner Bros. as its first single in 2006 after the band had road-tested it on stage the year before. It began life as a jam at half the speed, until Doug Martsch cranked the tempo with the Wipers in mind, and the result is a runaway tangle of riffs: four guitarists, Martsch, Brett Netson, Jim Roth and Steven Wray Lobdell, knotting lines over Brett Nelson's bass and Scott Plouf's drums.

Lobdell also chipped in piano, vibraphone and percussion, and mixed the track with Martsch. The band premiered the studio take as a MySpace stream, and the critics were won over: Pitchfork counted it among the best tracks of the year.
