"Only a River" was the first single from Blue Mountain, Bob Weir's third solo album, out on Legacy in 2016, and the song had been waiting a long time for him. Josh Ritter wrote it in the stairwell of his college dorm some 25 years earlier, and it jumped the queue once he got to work with Weir. Ritter kept the lyric credit; he, Weir and Josh Kaufman share the music.
Kaufman produced it with Weir and plays electric guitar, piano and mandolin, with Aaron Dessner on electric guitar, Scott Devendorf on bass, Ray Rizzo on drums and Rob Burger on keys. Weir strums acoustic guitar and sings, with Devendorf, Kaufman and Rizzo adding their voices, and the whole thing rolls along like country rock with nowhere it has to be. NPR's All Things Considered streamed it.
