"Laura Palmer" borrows its title from a character in Twin Peaks, David Lynch and Mark Frost's TV series, and the British band Bastille first put it out themselves in 2011 as the title track of a self-released EP. In 2013 it came back as a download and the fifth single from their debut album Bad Blood, the follow-up to their hit "Pompeii", and reached number 42 in Britain.

Dan Smith wrote it, sings it, plays keyboards and piano, and produced it with Mark Crew, who plays keyboards too. William Farquarson is on bass and Chris "Woody" Wood on drums, three violinists, a violist and two cellists add strings, and Mark "Spike" Stent mixed. Digital Spy's Lewis Corner heard Twin Peaks all through it, from the pulse-quickening beats to the eerie echoes.
