WACO by Violent Soho
WACO is an album by Violent Soho, released in 2016. 6 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 6 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “Viceroy”, on 1 list with a best position of #14.
WACO, out on I Oh You on March 18, 2016, is the record that carried Violent Soho all the way to the top at home. The four-piece from the suburb of Mansfield, together since 2004, came off the gold-certified Hungry Ghost and went straight in at number 1 on the ARIA chart.
It's fuzz-pedal heaven: Luke Boerdam howling over his and James Tidswell's guitars, Luke Henery on bass and Michael Richards on drums, the whole thing lurching between slacker drawl and full-throttle chorus. The comparisons to Nirvana, the Pixies and Mudhoney write themselves, but the band's own label for it, "stoner pop", fits the hooks better. "Viceroy", "Like Soda", "Blanket", "So Sentimental", "No Shade" and "How to Taste" all got a run. It topped Triple J's albums-of-the-year poll, and at the 2016 ARIAs it won Best Rock Album while the band took Best Group.
