Don't Tell a Soul was the Replacements' shot at the big time, put out by Sire on February 1, 1989, and the first of their records with Slim Dunlap on lead guitar in place of founding member Bob Stinson. The Minneapolis band that had helped invent alternative rock with Let It Be and Tim went out to Los Angeles, set up at Cherokee Studios and co-produced the thing with Matt Wallace: Paul Westerberg singing and playing guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass, Chris Mars on drums.

Then Chris Lord-Alge got hold of the mix, chasing a sound that would jump out of a car radio in three dimensions, and the result is the glossiest record the band ever made: guitars polished, drums booming, the rough edges sanded to a shine. Westerberg wasn't pleased, saying later that the rough versions he'd cut in his basement were nearer the mark. Under the sheen, though, his songs are as tender and rueful as ever. "I'll Be You" is the anthem, restless and ragged-hearted, and it gave them the only Billboard Hot 100 entry they ever had, topping out at #51 in May 1989. "Achin' to Be" aches exactly as advertised, "Talent Show" swaggers with a wink, and "We'll Inherit the Earth" and "Back to Back" fill out a record that sounds like a bar band trying on a new suit and not quite trusting the fit.

Rhino remastered it in 2008 with 7 extra tracks and liner notes from Peter Jesperson, and in September 2019 the Dead Man's Pop box set offered a remixed, resequenced version of the album.
