Go to School, the Lemon Twigs' second album, came out on 4AD on August 24, 2018, and it doesn't lack for nerve. Subtitled "a musical by the Lemon Twigs", it's a full-blown concept record about a chimpanzee brought up as a human boy, which is either the most charming idea of the year or the most ridiculous, depending on your tolerance for rock opera.
Brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario, from Hicksville on Long Island, sing, write and play just about everything, and they wear their love of '60s and '70s pop and rock proudly: power-pop hooks, glam strut, art-rock theatrics. They went the analog route to get there, recording to tape and mixing on a 28-channel PolyGram console from the 1970s that they bought off Jason Falkner. The result sounds lovingly out of time, in the best way.
