Code: Selfish, the Fall's 14th studio album, landed in 1992 with Craig Leon producing, and it's a harder, colder beast than Shift-Work from the year before. Techno fan Dave Bush had come in on keyboards and computers, and his machines grind away against Craig Scanlon's guitar, Steve Hanley's circling bass and Simon Wolstencroft's drums while Mark E. Smith barks his caustic riddles over the top. Most of it was cut in a converted church in Glasgow.

It still has its soft spots, "Time Enough at Last" (named after a Twilight Zone episode) and "Gentlemen's Agreement" among them, and Bush says "Immortality" owes something to Milan Kundera's novel of the same name. "Free Range" became the group's only self-written Top 40 single. It was also their last album for Phonogram, which dropped them after the Ed's Babe EP later that year and had to pay them off for cutting short a five-album deal; the band spent the money making The Infotainment Scan.
