Beyond Good and Evil, The Cult's seventh studio album, came out on Atlantic in 2001, the band's first new music in six and a half years and the fruit of the 1999 reunion. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, the band's songwriting core, brought back Bob Rock, who had first worked with them on Sonic Temple, and finally got Matt Sorum, who had toured with them back then, to drum on a studio record.
It's a big, heavy slab of hard rock, Duffy's riffs thick as bricks and Astbury bellowing over the top, far closer to metal than to the band's post-punk beginnings. "Rise" was the only proper single, with "Breathe" and "True Believers" pushed as promos. It didn't sell, and between that and old tensions boiling up again, the band came apart once more in 2002.
