Script of the Bridge, the Chameleons' debut, arrived on Statik on 8 August 1983, and it announced a Manchester band, formed out in Middleton only two years before, with a sound entirely its own. Mark Burgess sings and plays bass, John Lever drums, and Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies weave their two guitars into great shimmering, echoing sheets that swell and break like weather rolling in. Colin Richardson produced.

It's a moody, widescreen record, gloomy enough to get filed under gothic rock but too full of yearning to wallow. "Up the Down Escalator", "As High as You Can Go" and "A Person Isn't Safe Anywhere These Days" went out as singles. The big money went to other Manchester bands, but the Chameleons earned a cult devotion that has never let go, and What Does Anything Mean? Basically followed in 1985.
