0898 Beautiful South, the band's third album, arrived on Go! Discs in March 1992, and the title is a sly joke: 0898 was the premium-rate prefix for British sex lines. Coming off a hot streak, the group brought in producer Jon Kelly and set up at AIR Studios in London, and the sound beefs up to match, broader in the shoulders and darker in the mood than before.
Paul Heaton's words are as barbed and funny as ever, with Dave Hemingway sharing the singing, Dave Rotheray's guitar keeping things tender and Sean Welch and Dave Stead holding down the rhythm. Social comment slips in under melodies you could hum at the bus stop. "We Are Each Other" became their biggest American hit, reaching No. 10 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, while at home the album stalled at number 4, which the label blamed on a sleeve that put women's faces on the backs of terrapins. It still went gold.
