Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys' eleventh album, came out on Capitol on May 16, 1966, and it's the moment Brian Wilson's studio ambitions went all the way to the ceiling. He produced, arranged and wrote most of it, with Tony Asher supplying lyrics, cutting tracks between January and April at United Western Recorders, Gold Star, Sunset Sound and more. For the first time, session players like the Wrecking Crew handled most of the instruments while the band poured on those stacked harmonies.
Wilson was chasing Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and trying to top the Beatles' Rubber Soul, and you can hear him throwing everything in: jazz, exotica, classical touches, found sounds, instruments rock bands just didn't use. "God Only Knows" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" glow, "Caroline, No" went out as his solo debut, and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" confesses to not fitting in. America shrugged at first; Britain got it right away.
