We the Common, the third album from Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, came out on Ribbon Music on February 5, 2013, from the folk-rock outfit that started in Falls Church, Virginia, before moving to San Francisco. Thao Nguyen fronts it, singing and playing guitar, and John Congleton produced, pushing her restless, jittery folk into something punchier and more rhythmic, with grooves that bounce and bite.
The title track, "We the Common (For Valerie Bolden)", has a clattering, communal swing, and "Holy Roller" rolls along on twangy momentum. Joanna Newsom drops in to sing on "Kindness Be Conceived", her voice a strange, lovely counterweight to Nguyen's scrappier delivery.
