SOUND & FURY, Sturgill Simpson's fourth album, landed on Elektra on September 27, 2019, and it's the moment the country singer critics kept comparing to the outlaws floored the gas and drove straight off the map. Coming off A Sailor's Guide to Earth, which won him the Grammy for Best Country Album, he swapped the twang for hard rock, fuzzed-out psychedelia, blues grind and a funky, synth-slicked strut, a record that sounds built for a night drive with the dash lights pulsing.
It came with its own movie: a dystopian anime film on Netflix, Sturgill Simpson Presents SOUND & FURY, which Simpson wrote and produced with Japanese director Junpei Mizusaki of the studio Kamikaze Douga. "Sing Along" and "Mercury in Retrograde" carried it to rock radio. It earned a Best Rock Album nomination at the 63rd Grammy Awards, making him the first artist ever nominated for both that and Best Country Album.
