Time and Tide by Split Enz

Time and Tide, Split Enz's seventh album, came out on Mushroom in April 1982, recorded in Sydney from the previous December with Hugh Padgham producing. The band that started out as Auckland's art-rock oddballs, all theatrics and wild visuals, had long since found its way to sharp, melodic new wave, and this is where it all clicks.

Tim Finn, Neil Finn and Nigel Griggs are all aboard, and the record is warm, rich and a little melancholy, full of chiming keyboards and bright harmonies. "Dirty Creature" was the hit single, a jittery, eerie groove, and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" rolls along like a rousing singalong. It went to number one in New Zealand and Australia and won Best Australian Album at the Countdown awards. Conflicting Emotions followed.
