Real to Real Cacophony, Simple Minds' second album, came out on Zoom and Arista on 23 November 1979, the same year as their debut, Life in a Day. John Leckie produced, and the Glasgow five were Jim Kerr singing, Charlie Burchill on guitar, Mick MacNeil on keyboards, Derek Forbes on bass and Brian McGee on drums.

It's post-punk in the truest sense: jittery rhythms, bass lines that prowl, keyboards bleeding into guitar until you can't say which is which, and Kerr murmuring and yelping from somewhere inside the fog. "Changeling" and "Premonition" hit hardest, and the title track lives up to its name. The critics were impressed; the record buyers mostly weren't, and the band kept pushing on toward Empires and Dance.
