Freedom Flight, Shuggie Otis's second studio album, came out on Epic in September 1971, when the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was still in his teens, and it floats. Johnny Otis produced, and across just seven tracks Shuggie drifts between psychedelic soul, loose funk and jazz-fusion wandering, a hazy, sun-dappled record that sounds like it was made with the windows open.

The track everybody knows now is the original "Strawberry Letter 23", all dreamy guitar and gauzy vocals, the song the Brothers Johnson would later take to the top of the R&B chart and into the top five of the Hot 100 in 1977. Hearing Shuggie's first take, it's clear the song's strange, lovely glow was there from the start.
