Go Bang! is Shriekback's sixth studio album, out on Island in 1988, and the first without co-founding bassist Dave Allen, which leaves Barry Andrews firmly in the driver's seat. Island wanted a hit, badly, so British hitmaker Richard James Burgess came in to produce and mix, and the result is the band's most commercial record by a mile, with the studio tension to match.

The gamble paid off. The slinky, funk-laced grooves are polished to a high shine, the old weird edges sanded down just enough, and "Intoxication" went to number six on the brand-new Modern Rock Tracks chart, with "Sharkwalk" following it. There's even a cover of KC and the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight". A sad footnote: Joel Webber, their A&R man at Island, died shortly before it came out. Andrews steered the band back toward its more traditional sound with Sacred City in 1992.
