Old World Romance arrived on Dangerbird in 2012 as Sea Wolf's follow-up to White Water, White Bloom, and it's another chapter in Alex Brown Church's long, private conversation with indie folk. Church has always been the fixed point in Sea Wolf, a Los Angeles songwriter who started the project when his songs no longer fit his old band Irving and who took the name from Jack London's The Sea-Wolf, drawn to its self-taught, working-class sea captain.
That sense of a thoughtful loner comes through in the music: hushed, carefully turned songs that trade volume for atmosphere, the kind of record built for headphones and long drives rather than festival fields. "Old Friend" was the track that found its way onto the countdowns.
