The Great Divide, released on November 22, 2005, was Scott Stapp's first solo album after Creed, and it didn't wander far from home. Wind-up put it out, and John Kurzweg, who had produced all three of Creed's earlier albums, was back behind the board, so the heavy, churning guitars and Stapp's big chesty bellow arrive right where you'd expect them.

The record grew out of the band's breakup and out of songs Stapp had worked on that were inspired by Mel Gibson's 2004 film The Passion of the Christ, and plenty of listeners heard the Creed split running through the lyrics. It's earnest, arena-sized hard rock with the spiritual yearning turned all the way up. Reviews were mixed, but it went platinum within weeks of release. Proof of Life came next.
