You're the One, Rhiannon Giddens' third solo studio album, arrived on Nonesuch in August 2023, and every song on it is an original. The Greensboro, North Carolina, musician, who first made her name singing and playing fiddle and banjo as a founder of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, handed the controls to producer Jack Splash, and the result is warm, wide-open Americana.
Jason Isbell turns up as a guest, and the title track and "Too Little, Too Late, Too Bad" show off a voice that can swing from tender to thunderous in a bar. The reviews were warm. It capped a busy year: 2023 was also when Omar, the opera she wrote with Michael Abels, won the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
