Dry, PJ Harvey's debut, came out on Too Pure on 30 March 1992. It was recorded at The Icehouse, a local studio in Yeovil, by the trio that carried her name, formed in 1991, with her bandmate Rob Ellis producing. Early buyers got a bonus: the first 5000 LPs and first 1000 CDs came with demo versions of the songs.

Nothing else in 1992 sounded like this. Harvey's guitar is scratchy and wiry, the drums lurch and pound, and her voice goes from a low, dry murmur to a howl that could strip paint. "Sheela Na Gig" is the knockout, a fierce, bluesy stomp, and "Dress" is taut and tangled, a song that seems to be wriggling in its own skin. "Oh My Lover" moves with a slow, seductive menace. America got it on Indigo the same year, and in July 2020 it was reissued alongside an 11-track album of the demos.
