A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Pink Floyd's thirteenth studio album, came out on EMI in the UK on 7 September 1987 and on Columbia in the US a day later, and it was the first Floyd record made without Roger Waters, who had left in 1985. David Gilmour cut most of it on the Astoria, his converted houseboat, co-producing with Bob Ezrin while legal battles with Waters over the Pink Floyd name dragged on until months after release. Nick Mason stayed at the kit, and Richard Wright, fired by Waters back during The Wall, came back as a session player.

This isn't a concept album. Gilmour brought in songs meant for his third solo record and outside writers, and the sound is all polish: gleaming guitars, big drums, glassy atmospheres, as on the soaring "Learning to Fly" and "On the Turning Away". Critics loved the production and knocked the lyrics, Waters sneered, and it still went to number three in the UK and US, outselling The Final Cut.
