Set My Heart on Fire Immediately, Michael Hadreas' fifth album as Perfume Genius, arrived on Matador on May 15, 2020, three years after No Shape, and it's the sound of a songwriter throwing every door open at once. Blake Mills produced, with sessions at Sound City, and the palette is dizzying: baroque swells, synth-pop shimmer, funk, shoegaze haze, swampy rock, doo-wop and even a streak of industrial clank, all bent around Hadreas' voice.
Queer themes run right through it, and it tips its hat to '80s pop and classic rock without ever sounding like a costume party. "On the Floor" struts on a pulsing groove. Critics swooned, and some called it his best work yet.
