Strange Disciple by Nation of Language
Strange Disciple is an album by Nation of Language, released in 2023. 2 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 7 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “Sole Obsession”, on 4 lists with a best position of #18.
Nation of Language made their third album, Strange Disciple, about infatuation and the way it bends reality out of shape, and Play It Again Sam released it on September 15, 2023, two years on from A Way Forward. Nick Millhiser of Holy Ghost! produced, and the Brooklyn trio had a new bassist in Alex MacKay, who stepped in after Michael Sue-Poi left, alongside singer Ian Richard Devaney on guitar and synths and his partner Aidan Noell on synthesizer and backing vocals.
It's synth-pop that aches in all the right places, cool machines under a warm, pleading voice, and they rolled it out through five singles, from "Sole Obsession" in March to "Sightseer" a few days before release, with "Weak in Your Light" announcing the album along the way. Critics were on board: a Metacritic score of 78 from six reviews, and NME heard a band stretching out without letting go of its roots.
