Shooting Straight in the Dark, Mary Chapin Carpenter's third studio album, came out on Columbia on October 9, 1990, and along with State of the Heart before it, it's the record that got her out of the Washington, D.C., club circuit and onto country radio. It climbed to No. 11 on Billboard's country albums chart and sent four songs onto the Hot Country Songs chart.
The standout is "Down at the Twist and Shout", with members of the Cajun band BeauSoleil sitting in, and it went all the way to No. 2. Elsewhere "You Win Again", "Right Now" and "Going Out Tonight" show off her wry, folk-rooted songwriting, and Shawn Colvin sings backing vocals on three tracks.
