Sailing to Philadelphia, Mark Knopfler's second solo album, came out in 2000, five years after he'd put Dire Straits to bed, and it's the work of a man happily following his fingers down back roads. He produced it with Chuck Ainlay, and the sound is roots music in its Sunday best: country rock, folk and blues, all carried on that clean, fingerpicked guitar.

He called in some famous friends, too. James Taylor and Van Morrison both sing on it, as do Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze. The title track takes its story from Thomas Pynchon's novel Mason & Dixon, about Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, the English surveyors who marked out a boundary in the 1760s that later became shorthand for the divide between the American North and South.
