Solar Power, Lorde's third album, came out on 20 August 2021, and it's the New Zealand pop auteur trading synths for sunscreen. Written with Jack Antonoff, it grew out of the death of her dog and a 2019 trip to Antarctica, and it swaps the electronic pulse of her earlier records for breezy acoustic guitars, psychedelic haze and indie-folk strum. She called it her "weed album", and it plays like one: sun-dazed songs about lazy days at home in New Zealand, turning inward, with a pointed side-eye at fame and celebrity culture.
The title track led the way, followed by "Stoned at the Nail Salon", "Mood Ring" and "Fallen Fruit". It topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand, skipped CDs altogether for environmental reasons, and got a Māori-language companion EP, Te Ao Mārama. Critics praised her more grown-up singing but split over the songs, a reception Lorde later called confounding and painful.
