Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin's sixth studio album, rolled out on 24 February 1975 in America, and four days later in Britain, as a two-record set and the first release on the band's own Swan Song label. Jimmy Page produced, and the thing is as sprawling and bruising as a record this size has any right to be.

The core came from early 1974 at Headley Grange, a country house in Hampshire, where the band had time to stretch out and fool around with arrangements and recording. They got eight new songs out of it, just shy of three sides of vinyl, so they went back to the vaults and filled out a double with seven leftovers from the sessions for Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy. That gives it an unusual range: folk and hard rock, prog stretches and plain old rock 'n' roll, all under one roof. Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham sound like they can go anywhere. "Kashmir" is the colossus, a slow, hypnotic march with Plant wailing over the top. "Trampled Under Foot" is a funky strut, "In My Time of Dying" a long, grinding blues, and "Ten Years Gone" aches.

The record was finished and mixed by summer 1974, but Peter Corriston's die-cut sleeve was so hard to make that it held everything up. The wait was worth it: it went straight to number one in Britain and three in America, the band toured the US and took over Earl's Court for five nights, and by 2006 it had been certified 16× platinum in the US.
