Total Freedom by Kathleen Edwards
Total Freedom is an album by Kathleen Edwards, released in 2020. 2 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 18 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “Options Open”, on 10 lists with a best position of #3.
Total Freedom, Kathleen Edwards' fifth studio album, came out on Dualtone on August 14, 2020, and it's the sound of a songwriter who walked away and found her way back. In 2014, two years on from Voyageur, the Canadian quit music outright and opened a coffee shop in Stittsville with the perfect name: Quitters. It took Maren Morris asking her to write a song for Girl, in 2017, to get her going again.
She produced it herself alongside Jim Bryson and Ian Fitchuk, recording in Stittsville, Nashville and Kingston, and the alt-country here is lived-in and unhurried, rootsy guitars under a voice that never oversells a line, the old Suzanne Vega meets Neil Young comparison still holding. "Options Open" and "Hard On Everyone" were the songs that caught on, and critics welcomed her back warmly: it averaged 80 on Metacritic.
