To the Sea by Jack Johnson

To the Sea, Jack Johnson's fifth studio album, washed ashore in the spring of 2010, landing first in Japan on May 26 and reaching America on June 1, through Brushfire and Universal Republic. The Hawaii-born songwriter keeps things loose and easygoing, folk rock and soft rock with the tide rolling in, and the title suits a man whose environmental work so often centers on the world's oceans.

Nobody needed convincing: it debuted at number 1 in the US, moving 243,000 copies in its first week and joining Sleep Through the Static among his chart-topping albums. He kept the good-cause streak going on the road, too, sending the proceeds of the To the Sea tour to All at Once, a network of greening charities he backed that invited fans to pitch in.
