2014 Forest Hills Drive, J. Cole's third studio album, dropped on December 9, 2014, through Columbia, Roc Nation and his own Dreamville, and it arrived almost by stealth: announced 3 weeks out, no singles, next to no marketing. Cole spent the year recording it and produced most of it himself, with help from Illmind, Vinylz, Phonix Beats, Willie B and Cardiak, and it's the point where the North Carolina rapper turned toward more conscious, introspective subject matter.
Critics praised the ambition of its concept, the production and the writing. "Apparently", "Wet Dreamz", "No Role Modelz" and "Love Yourz" followed as singles after the fact. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 353,000 copies in its first week, took the top album prize at the BET Hip Hop Awards and the Billboard Music Awards' Top Rap Album trophy in 2015, drew a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album, and went six-times platinum by December 2024.
