Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, the seventh studio album from Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's cartoon band Gorillaz, landed on Parlophone and Warner on 23 October 2020, and it's the payoff to a year-long experiment. All through 2020, the Song Machine web series dropped songs and videos episode by episode, each with a different guest, and seven of the album's eleven tracks had already surfaced that way.
The guest list is a wild one: Robert Smith, Elton John, Beck, St. Vincent, Peter Hook, Slowthai, Slaves, Fatoumata Diawara, Octavian, ScHoolboy Q, 6lack, Kano, Georgia and Leee John. Producers ranging from James Ford and Prince Paul to Mike Dean and Mike Will Made It help make it gloriously scattershot, hopping between styles with 2-D's mournful croon as the thread. "Aries", "Désolé" and "Strange Timez" all reached the countdowns, critics loved the variety, and with the pandemic ruling out a tour, the band played it live from the studio that December as Song Machine Live From Kong.
