Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, the Glasgow band's third album, came out on Domino on 26 January 2009, and this time they refused to rush. After the quick-fire sessions for You Could Have It So Much Better, they took a break, started writing in early 2007 and recorded through 2008, partly in the town hall of Govan and partly at producer Dan Carey's studio in South London.
The result is a loose concept record about one big night out and the queasy morning after, and it swaps the jagged post-punk of the first two albums for something built for the dancefloor: dance-punk, new wave and electropop, with dub and the music of Jamaica and Africa seeping into the grooves. Alex Kapranos sings and plays guitar, Nick McCarthy adds guitar and keyboards, Bob Hardy plays bass and Paul Thomson drums. "Ulysses" and "No You Girls" led a run of 5 singles, the sleeve takes its cue from old crime-scene photos, Weegee's especially, and a dub remix album, Blood, followed.
