Mahashmashana by Father John Misty
Mahashmashana is an album by Father John Misty, released in 2024. 4 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 22 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “She Cleans Up”, on 11 lists with a best position of #9.
Mahashmashana, the sixth album Josh Tillman has made as Father John Misty, arrived November 22, 2024, on Bella Union and Sub Pop. Tillman produced it in Los Angeles with Drew Erickson, with longtime collaborator Jonathan Wilson as executive producer, and the title borrows a Sanskrit word for a great cremation ground, which tells you something about the mood.
After the soft rock and old-fashioned pop of his previous two records, this one goes big: sweeping, orchestral art rock with Tillman's satirical streak running right through it. "I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All" had first shown up on his hits collection Greatish Hits a few months earlier, "She Cleans Up" rattles and struts, and "Screamland" brings in Alan Sparhawk on guitar. "Josh Tillman and the Accidental Dose" rounds out the singles.
