Eric Burdon Declares "War" came out on MGM in April 1970, the debut studio album from Eric Burdon and War, a Long Beach outfit barely a year old that put Burdon out front of a multi-ethnic crew soaking up every sound drifting through the mixed-up neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Jerry Goldstein produced, and the record lets the band stretch out: funk, blues, jazz, Latin rhythm and psychedelic haze all bleed together, loose and smoky, with Lee Oskar, Howard E. Scott, Lonnie Jordan, B.B. Dickerson, Harold Brown, Papa Dee Allen and Charles Miller cooking behind the singer.

The back cover spelled out the mission, a war declared on the people for the right to love one another, which tells you exactly what kind of fight this was. "Spill the Wine" was the calling card, and the album went gold. In 1981 Goldstein's own LA Records put it out again, renamed after that song.
