Our Version of Events, Emeli Sandé's debut album, arrived on Virgin on 13 February 2012, fresh off her Critics' Choice win at that year's Brit Awards, from a Scottish-raised singer who'd already lent her voice to hits by Chipmunk and Wiley. She wrote every song on it herself, and Naughty Boy, her collaborator from the start, is among the producers alongside Emile Haynie and Mike Spencer.
It's a big-hearted mix of soul, R&B and pop built around that voice, which drew comparisons to Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill. "Heaven" set the tone with its pulsing urgency, and "Next to Me", a stomping, handclapping gospel-pop love song, turned into a global hit. The album went straight to number one in the UK, finished as the best-selling album of 2012 there, and took British Album of the Year at the 2013 Brits.
