What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid, Donovan's debut album, came out on Pye Records in Britain on 14 May 1965, the same year the young Scot stepped out of the British folk scene and onto Ready Steady Go!. Peter Eden, Geoff Stephens and Terry Kennedy produced it, and they had the sense to keep it plain and leave plenty of room for a voice that sounds half choirboy and half beatnik drifter.
The drawing card was "Catch the Wind", his debut single, a wistful, windblown ballad that became a UK hit. So much so that when Hickory Records put the album out in America in June 1965, it was renamed Catch the Wind after the single. This is folk from the coffee-house end of the street, before the flower power and before Mickie Most's studio shine, and it has all the plain charm of a first try.
