Tongue n' Cheek, released on 20 September 2009, was Dizzee Rascal's fourth album and the one where the grime pioneer went for the pop jugular. Where Boy in da Corner had been all jagged, claustrophobic beats, this one arrives in a neon tracksuit, trading grime for club-ready, pop-leaning bangers with a house pulse.
It worked spectacularly. "Dance wiv Me", "Bonkers", "Holiday" and "Dirtee Disco" all went to number one on the UK singles chart, and the record became the biggest seller of his career. "Bonkers" is the standout, a wonky, lurching dancefloor stomp with Dizzee's cheeky flow bouncing off it, while "Holiday" plays it sunnier and "Dance wiv Me" struts. Here was a British MC ruling the pop charts on his own cocky terms.
