Oh, No! It's Devo, the Akron band's fifth studio album, came out on Warner Bros. in 1982 after four months of work at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood between May and September, with Roy Thomas Baker producing. The classic lineup is all here: Mark Mothersbaugh singing, brother Bob on lead guitar, Gerald Casale on bass, the other Bob, Casale, on rhythm guitar, and Alan Myers drumming like a metronome with a sense of humour.
By now Devo had swapped much of their early art-punk clatter and de-evolution theory for shiny synth-pop, but the deadpan wit and satirical bite survived the makeover. "That's Good", "Peekaboo!" and "Big Mess" bounce along on chirpy, mechanical synth hooks, catchy as a jingle and twice as sly.
