Together Alone, Crowded House's fourth album, came out on Capitol in October 1993, and it's the sound of the band shaking off the tidy studio sheen of its first three records and getting its hands dirty in New Zealand. Mitchell Froom had produced those in America and Australia; this time the man at the desk was Youth, and the change lets in air, grit and a looser sense of wonder. It was also the first album with American multi-instrumentalist Mark Hart as a full member, alongside Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour.

Finn's songwriting is as sharp as ever. "Distant Sun" is a glowing, intricately knotted ballad that went top ten in New Zealand and Canada, while "Locked Out" charges in hard and caught fire in America after landing on the soundtrack of Reality Bites. Six singles came off it in all.
